Maze

After taking a long, hot shower, he’d pulled on a pair of Axel’s sweatpants and a T-shirt. Both were a bit too big but he didn’t mind. He was sitting with his phone in hand, staring at it when it rang. He’d been waiting for that call. When Caterina had announced to him that she wanted to see Micky off, he’d been both surprised and elated but also slightly concerned.

“Cat,” he said, picking up.

“The package has been delivered,” Caterina said.

“Good job.”

Caterina snorted. “Don’t ‘good job’ me.”

“Great job? Awesome job?”

“Asshole,” Caterina mumbled, making Maze chuckle.

“How did he take it?”

“I think he was in shock for most of it. I’m pretty sure he thought I was going to stab him or something during the whole drive,” Caterina said, a smile in her voice. “I think he was more scared of me than that big Russian guy. Damn, but he was something else.”

“Dmitri will find them a secure place,” Maze said, not a speck of doubt in his mind. Dmitri was Arkady’s guy, but he knew what he was doing, and handling abuse victims was his specialty.

“Thanks for letting me do this,” Caterina said.

“Have you reconsidered my offer?”

Caterina fell silent and that in itself spoke volumes. It meant she was actually spending the time to think it all through, and when she spoke, it was with a tranquil tone to her voice.

“These are the kind of people you help?”

“Every single one of them. Hunted. Frightened. Abused.”

He’d seen it all. But the memory that stuck with him was when the resigned look in his mother’s eyes—one that had been there throughout his whole childhood—was replaced with fierceness and resilience whenever she was protecting her kids. That was why he hadn’t hesitated for even a second to partner up with Arkady. There were so many people stuck in a situation they either hadn’t put themselves in or didn’t have the resources to get out of. He only knew of one woman who’d escaped the claws of her mafioso husband and that was Caterina’s mother. And it had cost her dearly.

Caterina cleared her throat and said, “I don’t want to be an active partner. But I do want to contribute.”

“I’m glad to hear that.”

“There’s no way you’re letting me in on how it all works, is there?”

“Hell no.”

“Worth a try.”

Caterina hung up after they said their goodbyes, and Maze leaned back in his chair with a deep sigh. Having Caterina on board or at least contributing would help them a lot. Arkady would be pleased.

He was dozing off when he heard someone enter the room. He straightened up in his chair and groaned when his neck smarted. He rubbed a hand over his neck and glanced up. Axel was standing in front of him, his arms crossed and an apprehensive look on his handsome face.

“The apartment,” Axel said as if Maze should know what he was talking about.

“Which apartment?”

“Davin’s. He never called in a favor because you didn’t tell him, and yet the explosion was labeled as an accident.
